Don’t cry for Hartlepool Marina

This video is in response to a recent ‘Economist’ article slating our home town of Hartlepool. http://www.economist.com/news/britain/21587799-these-days-worst-urban-decay-found-not-big-cities-small-ones-urban-ghosts

I don’t think the article is particularly fair on our town at all, especially given that it was written by someone who spent just one day in the town.

I’m not even going to try and argue against the article because it’s quite simply not worth the effort, the article is so biassed and short sighted and has such a narrow view of our town (& Hull & Wolverhampton). Hartlepool has so much potential and it’s a great place to live. I’ve had the privilege of visiting many different places throughout the world and I’m proud of where I come from, and am always flying the flag for the town wherever I go. I could live anywhere in the world but I have started a very successful business here and am raising my family here. Why would I do that if our town was so bad?

That’s not to say the town hasn’t got it’s problems, everywhere has BUT some of the issues e.g. high unemployment have been caused in part by central government and can’t be laid entirely at the feet of Hartlepool folk. The journalist failed to look at any of the effects of government led cuts on the working population – a large percentage of the town’s workers were employed in the public sector pre-2008. Also a serious lack of government backed investment in the area hasn’t helped at all. I could write an essay on the subject but I won’t…
