Hartlepool Wadokai Annual Club Championships 2013
14th July 2013
Every year we hold a club-only championship. Here are some of the photos of the event (reproduced with permission from the Codner family):
The event took place on one of the hottest days of the year and the judges were melting in their blazers but hey ho, the show must go on! There were some great performances in Kata and Kumite, with a great battle between Lewis & Joel in one of the final events of the day.
Hartlepool Wadokai End of Year Training Course & Kids Christmas Party
Today we held our End of Year Training course followed by our Kids Christmas Party to finish off a very busy, but very successful year for the club. We had 44 students turn up for the free training course and a staggering 92 kids (& a stack of parents) for the party! By far the best attendance we’ve had for a club event so far.
I’d like to personally thank the instructors, students, committee, parents and volunteers for all their hard work and dedication over 2011. Also, a massive thank you to all the parents who donated raffle prizes and last but not least, to George Gowland for another great Disco (accompanied by Luke & Nick’s band!).
Training Course
This course has became something of a club tradition since Carl & Amy came back from training in Japan, with the course content being copied from Arakawa Sensei Shiramizu dojo’ End of year course. After a thorough warm-up led by Sensei Amy, all the students completed a mammoth 1000 punches (of various types) and gruelling 1000 kicks. The Pee Wee’s especially showed fantastic spirit throughout! We finished off the session with a few Kata and a group shot (minus instructors).
Christmas Party
We held this party in a big sports hall because we had so many kids coming along. The Disco was provided by George Gowland (Tel: 07970 697779) and he was accompanied by Luke & Nick’s band, who played a 30min set to finish off the party. Catering was provided by Sensei Lynne, Michelle Butterfield and few other dedicated parents (Vicki, the flap jacks were my favourite {hint hint}).
During the party we also gave out a number of awards:
Cheerleader of the Year award 2011 – Miss Caroline Wilson
European Championships Awards – Jasmin Langley & Bailey Reed
Student of the Year 2011 – Roy Salmons
Hartlepool Wadokai JUNIOR Inter-Club Karate Championships
Today was the Hartlepool Wadokai JUNIOR Inter-Club Karate Championships. The event was held at the Belle Vue Sports Centre in Hartlepool and had almost 250 competitor entries from 11 clubs attending.
We started the day a few minutes behind schedule at approx 10:10am but by 2:10pm, all events were done and dusted. For this I’d like to personally thank ALL the officials and volunteers who made the day go so smoothly, and also the competitors and parents for being great sports throughout. I’d also like to personally congratulate Askam Karate Club for achieving a fantastic FIVE bronze medals in their FIRST EVER competition! Please click here to download the full results.
We’re missing a few podium shots for some reason (KA9 – 3rd Kyu + Kata, 16-18yrs; KU3 – Kumite, Male 10-12yrs; KU8 – Kumite Female 16-18yrs). If anyone has these can you please send me them?
I’d like to once again thank everyone for attending and hope to see you all at our Full Inter-Club Championships in March 2012.
Regards,
Carl
November & December Karate Events
As always at the club we’ve got an action packed month, with tons of events going on for our members.
Friday 4th November, 7-10pm – Okumachi Sensei Kata Course, Alfreton Leisure Centre, Derbyshire
This course is highly recommended to anyone interested in the standardised JKF-Wadokai Kata. I train with Okumachi Sensei as often as possible as he’s a fantastic Wadokai technician, I always come away learning tons! Hartlepool Wadokai classes are running as normal.
Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th November, Aiwakai Way to Excellence Course & Dan Grading, Alfreton Leisure Centre, Derbyshire
The club has four people taking their Dan Grade (Black Belt) tests this weekend in Alfreton. The weekend training course is led by Sakagami Sensei, supported by Peter May, Keith Walker and (maybe… not sure) Sensei Lee Minion too. It’s a good chance to immerse yourself in Karate for a full weekend. Speak to one of the instructors for more information.
Wednesday 9th November, 7-9pm, Hartlepool Wadokai AGM, Owton Manor Primary School
The Annual General Meeting for Hartlepool Wadokai, all members (16yrs+) welcome to attend.
Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th November, Sugosawa Sensei Seminar, Leeds
A fantastic opportunity to train with one of the original Japanese instructors who came to the UK all those years ago. Some of the club instructors had the opportunity to train with Sensei in January and thoroughly enjoyed it and as expected learnt tons! We’re very much looking forward to training with him again this month.
Sunday 13th November, English Karate Federation Referee Course, West Midlands
A number of the club instructors will be attending this Referee course in the West Midlands (a 400 mile round trip!) as part of their Referee training.

Club-Only Karate Championships
I’d like to remind all of our members that the ‘Hartlepool Wadokai Club-Only Karate Championships‘ will be taking place on Sunday 16th October at the Belle Vue Sports Centre. Registration will start from 9.30am and the event will start from 10am prompt. We are aiming to finish by approximately 4pm.
As the name suggests, this competition is only for our club and is therefore a perfect chance for students to try competition Karate for the first time. The event categories have been created to ensure that students compete within their current abilities and EVERY student will receive a custom made medal, just for taking part. We’ve got categories specifically for beginners (White & Red Belts) too, so our newer students won’t be ‘out of their depth’.
Entering competitions is by no means compulsory but as instructors, we feel it important for all students to compete at the earliest opportunity. Karate Competition provides a great opportunity for students to develop transferable key life skills such as:
• Healthy/active movement patterns
• Positive Attitude
• Increased Confidence
• Self Belief
• Life Long Learning
• Character Development
• Increased Attention Span
• Increased Social behaviour
• Social Acceptance
• Personal Skill Development
• Overcoming Obstacles
• Dealing with pressure
• Dealing with winning/losing
• Aiming for Excellence
• Overcoming Nerves
All of these life skills are learnt in regular Karate classes but we believe that the learning is accelerated in a competition setting.
We’ve invested over £1400 into this competition to ensure that the event is of the highest quality, just what our students deserve. We now need the support of parents and students to ensure the event is successfully attended.
I’ve attached the competition entry form and the latest club events calendar. ALL competition entries and fees must be received by Wednesday 12th October.
If you require any further information about this or any other event, then please contact me on 07984 798634, via email or speak to one of the officials/instructors at the club.
Best regards,
Carl

Club Training & Grading, Pre-Dan Test
08.10.11, Belle Vue Sports Centre
Yesterday, we held a club grading for those that have reached the required standard in regular classes. The grade consisted of a 2 hour training course, followed by the actual test. Considering some of the kids were as young as five, they all did exceptionally well! Congratulations to the following:
- Leyton Davis
- Sophie Hill
- Callum Pedley
- Jessica Egglestone
- Alex Lissah
- Joe Yellow
- Ellie Mullender
- Thomas Wilkinson
- Jack Stephenson
- Isaak Hill
- Jacob Hill
- Sonny Paylor
- John

- Phil
After the Junior training & grading, we held another 3 hour session for our advanced grades. This was to keep Mr Vince & Beth (our two Dan Grade/Black Belt candidates) on their toes and to see if they are ready to take the black belt test next month. It was also a good opportunity to see where our other brown belt students are at, and see what needs working on ahead of their potential December grading.
Hartlepool Wadokai JUNIOR Inter-Club Championships
Sunday 27th November 2011, Belle Vue Sports Centre, Kendal Road, Hartlepool, TS25 1QY
We’ve just put the finishing touches to our next Inter-Club championships, you can download the entry form here.
This is the first Inter-Club competition exclusively for those under 16 years of age that we’ve run so we’re really looking forward to seeing how it turns out. We’ve got Individual Kata, Pairs Kata and Individual Kumite events planned with the pricing designed to encourage competitors to give both Kata & Kumite a go. Entry fees as always have been kept to a bare minimum so we really hope to get the support from our karate friends to make the event a success.
Let us know if you’re planning to attend…
