Hartlepool Wadokai club-only Summer Championships

HW Summer Championships 12.07.15 POSTER

Karate competition is a great way to challenge yourself and to test your training. It can also help keep children motivated in their training and give them something to aim for, helping to teach them valuable life skills such as good sportsmanship and determination, all whilst making new friends and stretching their abilities.

This competition is only for our club members and Little Ninjas to take part in. It’s therefore a perfect opportunity to see what Karate competitions are all about.

The event is very relaxed and the club instructors (who are also nationally qualified judges/referees) will be explaining the competition rules in detail so that students and parents know what is going on, what judges look for and how you can help your child progress in Karate competition. The younger students will also get to see some of the older ones in action too.

—The best way of learning how to do something is to just give it a go, if we always waited until we were experts before trying something, well, nothing would ever get done!—

The Little Ninjas will have their own Kick Master category, so they won’t be competing against the Karate kids.

All entries need to be submitted and paid for in advance of the competition, strictly no entries on the day.

Please speak to one of the instructors for more information.

Hartlepool Wadokai – Start of Year Course 2015

Saturday 17th January 2015

Start of Year Course 2015 GROUP PHOTO

The club held it’s annual start of year course on Saturday and once again it was well supported. The event gives students the chance to get rid of those cobwebs from the Christmas and New Year break because it’s a much longer training session than a regular class. This is particularly beneficial since the next club grading is just a few weeks away.

We had a full compliment of instructors so students were given a lot of specific feedback on their basics, pairs work and Kata (pre-arranged form). We also had time to work on some wrist manipulations and controls and the advanced students went through some Tanto Dori (Knife defence).

Thank you to everyone who supported the club by attending.

Sensei Keith Walker course @ Dojo HQ

We arranged a last minute training course with Sensei Keith Walker at our club today. The course was mainly to help our higher grade students prepare for their upcoming Dan grades but we also had a session just for our juniors too.

The juniors trained 12-2pm and the seniors 2-6pm (we had an extra hour than planned!).  We were all put through some great movement exercises and a thorough warm-up. This was followed by basics, with special emphasis on the correct way of moving the body without diminishing the effect.

Working with partners, we continued with the theme of effectively using the body and this progressed for the seniors into Kihon Kumite and Kumite Gata (advanced pairs work). This is exactly what our advanced students and us instructors need.

It was a very good course, we would have liked to have seen a few more students attend but understand that this was very short notice – and there is a club event on every weekend until Christmas!  It actually worked well that each group was small as it allowed Sensei Keith to spend extra time with each student, sometimes when you attend a course with 50+ people in the hall it can be difficult to grasp the more difficult things being taught, or if there is a great mix of abilities then the course may be tailored to the less experienced – this was great because it was advanced theory and practical for advanced students. Well done to all, we’re looking at dates for early next year for another course with Sensei Keith Walker.

EKF Northern Region Kumite Squad Training

On Saturday 3rd May, our club had the privilege of hosting an English Karate Federation Northern Region Kumite Squad Training at our Dojo HQ.

The 4 hour session was led by regional EKF fight coach, Sensei Gavin Foster, 4th Dan and was very well attended by clubs and athletes from all over the North of England.

10252027_10152198989208110_3123864170299037402_n

The athletes were put through some great fight drills and exercises and given some really good advice about what it takes to succeed at the highest levels of Karate competition.  I particularly liked the way this was put across by Sensei Gavin. It was no-nonsense but really friendly, basically he said ‘if you want to just do a little bit of competition, every now and then then that’s perfectly fine’, however, if you want to be the best of the best, and compete against the best in the world then you need to do x, y and z.

The feedback from the session has been great, so much so that the next Northern Region Squad Training has been booked for Saturday 13th September, also at Hartlepool Wadokai Dojo HQ (126 Whitby Street South, Hartlepool, TS24 7LP) 9.30am registration – Full details and registration forms can be downloaded from the English Karate Federation website.

Hartlepool Sakagami Course 11.05.14

Start of Year course

Saturday 11th January 2014
Dojo HQ: 126 Whitby Street South, TS24 7LP

image

Today we held our Start of Year course. The 4 hour course is a great way to kick start the year because we covered all of the JKF-Wadokai basics, and drilled everyone on Kata, pairs and finished off with Kumite. For some this was the first session back to the club this year so they did will to survive it.

We ran out of time so we didn’t manage to cover Tanto Dori (knife defence) but we’ll build that into lesson plans over the next few weeks instead.

Well done to everyone who came along, there was a really good atmosphere all day and *most* worked really hard.

Finally, well done to Harvey who was presented with the Student of the Year award for 2013. Really well deserved. The award also comes with a 1 year scholarship to the club, meaning that Harvey can train as much as he wants with the club in 2014 for Free. Who would like the award next year?

Hartlepool Wadokai End of Year Course & Christmas Party (Bonenkai)

Saturday 14th December

Dojo HQ: 126 Whitby Street South, Hartlepool, TS24 7LP

We’ve adopted the Shiramizu Dojo / Japanese tradition of having a ‘forget the year’ party or Bonenkai each December. The Christmas party at our club is always preceded by a free end of year training course where we carry out another Shiramizu tradition – everyone performs 1000 punches! (Last year we also did 1000 kicks but this nearly broke the seniors so we didn’t do it this year!). The course is always a great chance for students who attend different classes throughout the week to get together as one group.

After the hard training session we quickly set up for the Christmas party. We had another great disco from Nick & George – thanks very much guys. We also had a ‘best decorated Christmas cake’ competition. Here are the entries:

December club grading

Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th December 2013

Dojo HQ: 126 Whitby Street South, Hartlepool, TS24 7LP

This was a really busy weekend for the club with student’s from 3 years upwards training and grading. The little ninja’s trained and graded over a 2 hour period – a long time considering how young they are! The younger/lower grade students trained for 3 hours on the Saturday going over the finer details of their grade. The actual test was done after the training. Higher grades completed 6 hours training over the two days and done their test on the Sunday afternoon.

There were some great performances, in particular the Little Ninja’s – they’re going to be Karate superstars if they stick in!!!

Hartlepool Wadokai Beginners Championships

Sunday 24th November 2013

Dojo HQ: 126 Whitby Street South, Hartlepool, TS24 7LP

HartlepoolWadokaiBadge

The club recently organised a small club only competition exclusively for our beginners. We’ve done this a few times over recent years and it’s a great way to get people to try Karate competition for the first time. As usual in this event, we have our higher grade juniors and assistant instructors helping to judge. This is great because the beginners are more relaxed (rather than having a formal affair with judges in blazers etc…) and our up and coming instructors get some great experience – some of these will be starting to  attend the English Karate Federation referee training in 2014 to qualify as national judges.

The club always has great support from parents and volunteers but at this competition we actually had more officials than competitors – definitely a first for the club! Thank you to the officials/volunteers and the parents and competitors who supported the event.

Sensei Amy was particularly impressed with some of the fighters at the competition with one or two being pre-selected for the Hartlepool squad launching next year. Full results can be downloaded here.

Hartlepool Wadokai Halloween Party 2013

On Halloween the club held an erm… Halloween Party, in our shiny new Dojo HQ. A lot of the mats were cleared away, tables & chairs set up and scary decorations were superglued/blue tacked/pinned/nailed/sellotaped to the shiny walls of the pristine/immaculate white walls (Can you tell Carl was a little concerned about this?).

We had a staggering 200 people turn up for the party which made this one of the biggest club-only events we’ve ever held. It was massive success with most people getting dressed up with some great costumes and 60 entries into the pumpkin carving competition! As always, George & Nick did a great job with the disco, and also Lynne & co with the catering/decorating – all made the night a success. Thank you to everyone who came along, the next party will be our Kids Christmas Party – December 14th, tickets available now!

Hartlepool Wadokai Team Kumite Championships

Sunday 13th October 2013 – Dojo HQ, 126 Whitby Street South, Hartlepool, TS24 7LP

IMAG2923

Yesterday we held our first Karate competition at our new Dojo HQ. This was a Team Kumite (fighting) competition. The event was a low-key affair and only for our club – we wanted to see how our shiny new Dojo HQ would handle a lot of people in at once whilst also giving our students the chance to get some competitive ‘mat-time’.

All in all I’d say the event was successful, with 21 competitors – some of whom had never entered a Karate competition before!

The competition was open to all of our students, and we simply created the teams to try and make them as fair and balanced as possible using ‘9 years & under’, ’10 – 12 years’ and ’13 years +’ as the age splits. Each team was made up of at least one person from each age group and competitors only fought against opponents of the same age, just in a team format. Some teams had five fighters, and others just four. Those without a full compliment selected one of the 9 years & under fighters to compete twice (Fighter 4) each round. The breakdown was as follows:

Fighter 1 – 9 years & under

Fighter 2 – 10 – 12 years

Fighter 3 – 9 years & under

Fighter 4 – 9 years & under

Fighter 5 – 13 years & above

The event only had five teams so trophies were awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place only. 3rd place was fought for by the two teams who lost to the finalists (Team 1 & Team 3).

Teams

Results

There were some great, very close matches with quite a few finishing as a tie. Some team matches went right down to the final seconds of the last fight to decide the outcome. It was good to see the teams working together and the different captains leading their teams in different ways, from a different warm-up, different team talk and different words of encouragement when their fighters were up. Well done.

Unfortunately, not everyone can win but a huge congratulations to those that did. The results are:

IMAG2936

1st Place – Team 2 (Harvey, Tyler, Joe, Hannah)

IMAG2935

2nd Place – Team 5 (Daniel, Esta, Diego, Oakley)

IMAG2933

3rd Place – Team 1 (Conor, Will, Leyton, Olivia)

I’d like to thank Sensei Lynne, Michael, Amy and Beth, and Sempai Roy for helping me with the judging. And a big thanks to Sue for running the table on her own – a difficult job at the best of times, but perhaps more so for team events. Also a big thanks for the competitors, parents and cheer leaders for coming along and supporting the fighters and the club.

There are a number of competitions coming up over the next few months, including a planned club-only beginners championships next month, please speak to one of the instructors for more information.

Upcoming Events

The club has had a busy September 2013. We’ve relaunched our School P.E. Karate & After School sessions and added a lot of new classes to our weekly schedule. This month we have also held the biggest club grading we’ve ever had and attended a 3 day long JKF-Wadokai Master’s course.

The rest of the year is just as busy, with some great training and competition experiences to be had by our members.

Club Training & Grading Weekend

Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd September 2013

The club has just finished holding a Training & Grading weekend. It was an opportunity for students to train for 6 hours across both days and specifically cover their grade syllabus. Those that were ready after the course were able to take the test for their next belt on the Sunday afternoon. The course attendance was much higher than we expected but all in all it was a successful weekend event.

Congratulations to everyone who trained, especially our younger students who are not accustomed to training for so long in one go.

A big well done to those that passed their grades.

This was the first weekend-long grading that we’ve done and we’re likely to tweak the format a little bit for the next one. e.g. We’ll most likely stagger the training & grading times for the different graded students.

We’ll also be fully rolling out our new grading syllabus for the next grading too. One or two students were also awarded the ‘new’ belts today which will help make the grades more achievable for the younger students, without ‘dumbing down’ the syllabus.

I’d like to thank the instructors and assistant instructors for helping out over the weekend.

Well done everyone

Hartlepool Wadokai Dojo HQ – NOW OPEN!!!

I’m very very pleased to announce that the Hartlepool Wadokai Dojo HQ is now OPEN for business. It’s taken a lot of hard work from a lot of people, and cost a small fortune but the first classes will take place on Tuesday 27th & Friday 29th August 2013.

We are taking names for our Brand New ‘Little Ninja’ classes which are specially designed for 3-4yrs & 4-7yrs, we’re really excited about these classes because they cover FUNdamentals, include lots of key skills and games, and are basically a LOT of fun! (Contact Carl on 07984 798634 for details)

Their will also be lots of new classes launching in September, watch this space for more information…

Dojo HQ

Room 1

The last Dojo HQ update was almost 7 weeks ago and yes, we should have been finished by now but… well, we’re not. Not yet. As with any project of this size, their have been some delays. The main one being the re-wire, we’re now into week 9 of what was quoted as a 2 week job and we’re likely to only get room 1 done before September with the current electrician. It’s been frustratingly slow but the delay essentially stopped ALL work for quite a number of weeks because we couldn’t finish walls etc… until the first fix was done. This has also caused us to lose some tradesmen that we’re due to start (joiner!) but couldn’t because the wiring wasn’t finished. As with most things, it’s faster to do jobs yourself and Sensei Michael has ended up jumping in to get a lot of the cables run etc… to speed the job along.

We’ve been working very hard getting as much done as possible and room 2, is very nearly done, but again, this can’t be finished fully until the Electrician has run the cables.

The electrician has been back on site over the past few days and we’ve started to gain some momentum again. The mains power will be switched on on Tuesday 16th July (if everything goes to plan).

Room 1 outstanding

We’ve got a few floor tiles to lay (needed cutting down first)

A little bit of skirting around the reception area

2 shelves added to built in storage

Bag/shoe storage fixed to the wall

New Ceiling tiles put in place (can’t be done until Electrician is finished with the lights & sockets)

Electrical Sockets put in place & wired up

Stair/office/homework room carpet

Lights/Water Heaters/Hand Dryers wired up in toilets

Doors to hang in toilets/changing rooms/office (Joiner will be doing this this week)

Room 2 outstanding

A few bits of wall to board up (once electrician has ran the wires), plaster & paint

Skirting board made/painted/fixed

Lights and sockets

Level patches of the concrete floor

Flooring laid for kitchen/seating area

As you can see, their isn’t actually very much to do. The past few weeks have been very frustrating but hopefully you can see by the photos that we’re almost there.

Dojo progress report

Saturday 18th May was originally going to be the clubs Annual Sponsored Walk. It was a day of torrential rain but that wouldn’t have ordinarily stopped the kids, parents and instructors at the club. In the past we’ve faced flooded lakes, hail storms and gale force winds but this was different.

The Dojo HQ got flooded… again! Though this time we actually figured out where the water was getting into the building because it was still raining outside. It was actually coming in through the new waste pipe that has just been installed for the toilets! Carl had to block the pipe with the only thing at hand – his hoodie! We cancelled/postponed the scheduled walk and instead diverted the troops to the HQ to clean up. It took just over an hour to mop everything up & assess the damage then we put people to work on the refurbishment (well, they were there….!).

Because we had so many people on site, we got tons done. More people turned up on the Sunday too so it was a very productive, but totally exhausting weekend with walls removed & rebuild. Tons of MDF/Chipboard walls built and plasterboard added over the top in room 2. Some of the walls  were skimmed & painted too. The never ending painting of the ceiling in room 2 continued – this time with 3 people up three different scaffold towers to speed up the job.

The electrician still hasn’t started at all, we’ve had delays from a couple of sparky’s giving us quotes. It’s going to be the biggest single expense of the refurbishment so we need to make sure the specification is what we need and want, at a reasonable and affordable price.

Monday & Tuesday were designated ‘days of rest’ with (apart from cleaning up) no work being done on site. There have been a few meetings with contractors and local partner agencies though so progress is still being made.

Dojo HQ update…

Today we were working flat out. We patched up the damaged plasterboard in room 2, added chipboard sheets to make sure the kids don’t end up putting their fists through, then over boarded with fresh plasterboard sheets. We’ve skimmed the joints ready for light sanding tomorrow.

Lynne was carrying on painting the ceiling in room 2 too.

Sue has been busy painting & patching up some of the walls in room 1.

Finally, we have redesigned the changing rooms & toilets (again) and built some of the stud walls for the toilet block whilst the plumber ran the majority of the pipe work. Porcelain stuff should arrive tomorrow.

Tomorrow another kitchen gets removed so we can remove a few more old stud walls & get started on patching up one of the exterior walls.

Still on target for June 1st opening.
